Getting It All Done - A Weekly Cleaning Schedule that Works

Does cleaning your house seem overwhelming? Do you find yourself spending your ENTIRE weekend elbows deep in cleaning supplies to get it all done? If so, this weekly cleaning routine could be exactly what you need to break up your task list, relieve your stress & get your home back in order.

A few years ago, my life looked much different than it does now. Kent & I had a good system going in life. He had his household responsibilities & I had mine. Aside from work, we just had each other. Life seemed pretty simple. Then, we had our son & things shifted pretty quickly.

In the early stages of motherhood, I was having a hard time figuring out how to keep up with it all. I was trying to care for my home, my husband, my baby - oh, & myself (lol)! I was overwhelmed! Needless to say, cleaning wasn't at the top of my priority list, and it showed.

I had to make a change! I needed a schedule.

Being a schedule oriented person, creating one that best fit my needs wasn't too difficult. I sat down and really thought about what would work for our home that was attainable. No longer would I be letting things pile up or leaving all of my chores/ tasks for one day. Instead, I came up with a weekly cleaning routine that has been a life saver!

The Overall Plan:

My weekly cleaning schedule is simple & completely customizable.

Each day of the week is assigned a specific room in the house. Dividing the week up by room keeps my daily task list small & allows me to give myself a mental "atta girl" when each room is done. With this schedule, I am also able to get most things done by Friday, so my weekends are usually cleaning free (YAY)!

I also try to divide and conquer the laundry for the week. This doesn't mean I always have a load to do everyday, but scheduling it allows me to spread the loads out (if I have them), so I don't end up with a pile in my closet the size of Mt. Everest.

Check out my weekly cleaning schedule below & make adjustments to it that best fit your needs. Remember, Finding Balance in Mother(Mrs)hood is all about doing what works for YOU!

Thursday - Kitchen/ Dining Room

  • Clean countertops

  • Quick dusting

  • Sweep/ mop floors (I used a Swiffer WetJet for a quick clean on our laminate floors)

  • Laundry: Lights/Whites

Friday - Catch Up

  • Catch up on things that didn't get done earlier in the week

  • Work on monthly cleaning tasks (ie. cleaning appliances, windows, wiping down base boards, etc.)

  • Organizing projects

  • DIY home projects

This could also be a great day to run errands - maybe grab a Starbucks as a treat for a job well done this week!

Saturday/ Sunday - Rest & Relaxation

If I am able to stay on-top of my cleaning schedule for the week (which is the hope), weekends get to be about spending time with my family. Aside from my daily tasks (ie. make the bed, do the dishes, straighten up), I try not to do any additional cleaning on the weekends.
